INVESTMENT WORKSHOP, WEDNESDAY 18TH JUNE 2014

The Chamber of Commerce are pleased to have carried out an initial investment workshop at the offices of the Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday 18th June 2014. This workshop was the brainchild of the Investment & Planning Group at the Chamber which meets every two months, with the blessing of the Chief Executive, Kevin Smith, and the main Board.

This provided an opportunity for three businesses who are members of the Chamber of Commerce to share their business plans and ideas for three new vision businesses. These ideas range from tourism, infrastructure and brewing. These presentations were made by Patrick Birley of Goddards, Nick Wakefield and Peter Tomlinson.

The Chamber of Commerce hosted the event with representatives from the Chamber of Commerce, the Destination Management Organisation and Invest IW. The idea behind the event was that each business was to provide for a presentation of 20-30 minutes, and then get feedback for another 30 minutes from two sources. The first source, or panel, comprised of financial expertise and advice from Ray Cobb from the Solent Growth Hub, representing the Solent LEP, Graham Biss from Natural Enterprise and Tim Ellis of Ellis Bower Consulting, Banking and Financial Consultants.

This allowed each business to explore what grant, subsidies and commercial loans might be available either through the Solent LEP, or through the banking system for these exciting projects.
The second panel were invited guests of the Chamber who could provide useful observations. These included Geoff Underwood, main Board member of the Chamber of Commerce and CEO of Inflight Peripherals Limited, Simon Dabell, Chairman of the Destination Management Organisation, Geoff Banks, Chairman of the Construction Hub and Sue Lucas of Moore Stephens, John Owen, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, Nick Callaghan, Director of Invest IW and Christopher Scott, Chairman of the Investment & Planning Group, Chamber of Commerce.

Lunch was provided by the Michelin Chef Robert Thompson of the George Hotel, Yarmouth, and sponsored by Invest IW.

The meeting was Chaired by John Owen, Chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and Christopher Scott, Chairman of the Investment & Planning Group.

All participants found it worked well and felt that this format should be taken forward again to assist other members of the Chamber who might want to come forward with idea where financial backing and viability could be tested.

Feedback included:-

Sue Lucas, Moore Stephens – “workshop worked really well”.

Geoff Banks – “I found it a most worthwhile session and hopefully those present found it as rewarding. The projects debated were all of great merit and underlines peoples commitment to further the Island entrepreneurial spirit”.
